Education System Fail

As if I needed more proof about the eroding nature of our public education system, I had a shining example at work on Tuesday afternoon. An 18-year old guy came to buy cigarettes. The conversation went like this:

Boy: "How much is a pack of Pall Malls?"
Me: "Three thirty-four."
Boy: "Can I get two with nine dollars?"

No, I can't make this stuff up. And no, this is not an isolated incident. I see this stuff daily. In large numbers. Along with a bunch of other stuff that would make you slap your forehead. Something has got to change.

It's like I posted today at my blog with kids not being able to TELL TIME!

Largely, it's not the school's fault...it's just bad parenting (or even the LACK of it), but that's just my opinion.
I could be wrong.

Good post.
Stay safe.

While I can't disagree that poor parenting is part of the problem, I think we need to look at the root cause of it.
First, we have degeneration of the family unit. One man, one woman for life now seems the exception rather than to rule, and who cares about how that affects the children. Plus, we have government programs and such that PENALIZE marriage, which has shown to be the best tool to fight against poverty, and more than likely, other things as well. This is all due to the country losing its moral base.

Is it the schools'/teachers' fault? Yes and no. Some have proven they have no common sense (suspension for drawing (on paper) a gun, much less, forbid it they bring a toy water gun to school). Some teachers honestly don't care. More than that, it's the federal .gov. The DoE sets ridiculous standards, and now we have standardized testing and the No Child Left Behind Act (also aptly called the No Child Gets Ahead Act) which forces teachers into situations and material which is not appropriate nor worthwhile.

I just got out of the high school system 5 years ago, and I know some teachers who affirm that the .gov is making their jobs harder and much less efficient.
