V for Vendetta: Scary Parallels to America Today

Lately I have been desiring to re-watch V for Vendetta. I remembered it having some parallels to what is happening in America. After just finishing it, it has become scary. There are many more things in common between the movie and our country than I could have remembered from the first time watching it. Let's look at some of them.

First, the movie starts with a scene during which people are going into their homes as the speakers in the streets proclaim the curfew that is now in effect "for their own good". Our government seems to think we need them to take care of us, and are trying to make laws "for our own good". This is tyranny.

Second, the media is controlled by the government (much like the Obama Administration would like to drown out dissenting views by force of law). At one point, in the television station, Evey asks a question of her co-worker, who replies, "our job is to report the news, not fabricate it; that's the government's job." Sound familiar when compared with the mainstream media?

Third, there is extreme government surveillance of citizens. Dissenters are found and dealt with (killed). Our government already has the means for this, and Obama is pushing for more power to control communication and spy on citizens.

The plot also brings to light the means by which the "chancellor" (read "dictator") came to power. Initially He was an extremist politician who gained support, won battles, gained more support, gained a militaristic following, and grew more power-hungry. In order for the people to see the need for a singular position of power, a crisis is needed. Enter the viral infections spawned by the government (swine flu, anyone). As 100,000 die, said politician "discovers" the antidote, which he really had all along, and the people elevate him to power.

The main character, V, echoes a thought of our founding fathers. The people should not be afraid of the government; the government should be afraid of the people. However, the people in this scenario have already been disarmed (it is Britain, after all). When the rioting for freedom and real change begin, and the people prepare to march on Parliament, an investigator asks the chief what he thinks will happen, to which the chief replies, "The same thing that happens any time people without guns try to take on people with guns."

Folks, this is a very real scenario. With Obama and his agenda, it becomes all the more real. The previous paragraph explains the necessity of the people maintaining firearms. We the people must call the government what it is before it is too late. We must make the media accoutable for bias instead of reporting. We must take responsibility for our own lives and our own freedom. W must make sure the government leaders know that WE THE PEOPLE are the United States, and that we wish for freedom to reign, and that we will not tolerate more encroachment on our lives "for our own good".

Now is the time. Tomorrow may be too late.

wow, I think your overblowing this

I think your spot on...although the need for violence isn't necessary at this point, there is a greater need now for a serious accountability of what the current status quo is within the government both at the federal and state level. When elected officials feel that they know what is best for their constituents, something is deeply flawed within the system itself and stock needs to be taken.

I agree. America is inches away from creating a real life V for Vendetta. God will see to it that justice prevails in the end, man is not capable of this. The experiment of man controlling man will soon end according to the book of Revelation. What a glorious day that will be.

I've recently watched this movie again, and while the solution BY "V" is not the best from a Christian standpoint, there seems to be NO other alternative to motivate the people into action.
This movie is on a LOT of lists when it comes to dystropic films, and it's ONE future I would not be comfortable (or free) in one bit.
Nor should any of us.

Good post.

A couple of those comments must have snuck in before I had moderation on, cause I didn't even see them till just now. I'll start by answering the charge of the first anon, who did not want to put their name to a detraction. The only thing I can admit to being wrong about is the swine flu conjecture. I misread that one, but still don't think I'm wrong about the idea of creating a crisis.Thankfully I think enough Americans have woken up right now that it wouldn't work.

Now to my other three generous posters. . . No, thankfully we are not at the point of violence yet (though it seems some on both sides are urging it, whether intentionally or not), and no, perhaps V's solution was not the most Christian.

Do consider, as we have seen in the past two years, the increasing arrogance of elected officials. That attitude has put our country into at least two wars, one of them being the War Between the States. Don't be naive though in thinking it can't happen again. Study history, for it repeats itself, though it seldom does so exactly. Keep an eye out for what's happening in our country and world, and prepare yourself and family for the likely coming storm. Oh, and keep praying it doesn't come to that.

Spot on. It is scary but we must stand together and not be scared out of our freedom!

So I read that the former United States is so desperate for medical supplies that they have allegedly sent several containers filled with wheat and tobacco. A gesture, they said, of good will. You wanna know what I think? Well, you're listening to my show, so I will assume you do... I think it's high time we let the colonies know what we really think of them. I think its payback time for a little tea party they threw for us a few hundred years ago. I say we go down to those docks tonight and dump that crap where everything from the Ulcered Sphincter of Ass-erica belongs! Who's with me? Who's bloody with me? Its kind of scare with the conspiracies about the war, martial law, pandemics, FEMA camps, everything that the government doesn't tell us... BUT

Anonymous said...

Did you like that? USA... Ulcered Sphincter of Ass-erica, I mean what else can you say? Here was a country that had everything, absolutely everything. And now, 20 years later, is what? The world's biggest leper colony. Why? Godlessness. Let me say that again... Godlessness. It wasn't the war they started. It wasn't the plague they created. It was Judgement. No one escapes their past. No one escapes Judgement. You think he's not up there? You think he's not watching over this country? How else can you explain it? He tested us, but we came through. We did what we had to do. Islington. Enfield. I was there, I saw it all. Immigrants, Muslims, homosexuals, terrorists. Disease-ridden degenerates. They had to go. Strength through unity. Unity through faith. I'm a God-fearing Englishman and I'm goddamn proud of it!

In the film, they are correct that Godlessness in this country is what will lead to our downfall... STRENGTH THROUGH UNITY... UNITY THROUGH FAITH!

Matt said...

It is true, and the idea of strength through unity and unity through faith is a concept the founders believed in. I believe it was Franklin who said "We must stick together or we will surely hang apart." And you can also look at the fact that the founders were men of faith, no matter what the revisionist history books say. True history bears it out.

Remember, remember the fifth of November.

Given events of the past two weeks (court rulings re: Fourth Amendment) I fear you are correct. I certainly hope not, but it seems we are near the point of no return, if not past it already.

Obama's administration is in no way as invasive as the Bush administration. Have you ever actually read any laws?? It's called the patriot act. It was instated by GEORGE W BUSH and its purpose is to allow wire tapping and surveillance of every day average citizens. As for your allegations of the swine flu... I don't remember the part where Obama comes out with some miraculous cure and gains power? Maybe you just wrote that in history like all these other lies? Not one thing that you have said can be proven. You hate our president because you are narrow minded and you watch fox news. You hate the president because he's black. Everything you just wrote is made up. You didn't research one fact in that little piece up there. Read a book. Then come talk to me.

Ah another anon who refuses to place a name with a detraction. i believe they call that cowardice. yYou ask if i have ever read any laws. Many more than you have read of my posts or even comments on this page alone. I am completely for repeal of the so called Patriot Act and disbanding of DHS along with many other agencies. if you want to look at facts you should look up what Oba.a has done to EXPAND DHS further into our lives. i already said i was wrong about swineflu but believe the idea of a crisis still stands.
Now to address your ludicrous personal attacks. I dont watch fox. dont even have cable or internet at home. In fact im generally too busy working or reading to watch any tv. I listen to anyones thoughts and change my stance if proven wrong. That is the opposite of narrow minded. Then you show your true character and play the race card which would be laughable to anyone i know and especially go to church with. Im the only white guy in a black congregation.
Oh and i stopped trying to convince people like you long ago. Anyone who plays the race card so freely or ignores my own admittance of being wrong and then calls me a liar is already beyond reach. you are one of the people who is going to have to lie in the very uncomfortable bed you have made.

God is a mythical creature. In order to make a difference you have to do something about it, not wait for a man on a cloud to interfere

Matt said...

Anon, I'm sorry you feel that way about God. I believe the evidence supporting the existence of God far outweighs evidence to the contrary. The evidence surely outweighs the evidence for spontaneous combustion and the appearance of life from non-life.

As for your last statement, you have to understand that faith in God does not mean just sitting back and waiting on something to happen. It means doing something about it while trusting God to lead you to the right actions, and helping you with actions that are beyond your abilities. Faith is something that has to be active, not passive. Every example in the Bible teaches to trust God WHILE doing what he expects, not waiting around for it to happen like magic.

Written in 2009. Now, in hindsight, more applicable than ever? Big Brother is definitely watching. I say this anecdotally from my own experience and in reference to the surveillance of reporters, targeting of political groups ipso facto by Government tax agencies...et cetera. This is getting BAD folks. And it's a slippery slope!

If you think your guns can protect from a dictatorship like that you are naive. this is not how it works. Iraq was under brutal dictatorship and yet many Iraqis were armed and weapons weren't the problem. the chancellor in the movie had a following, had people who support him and agree with him and allowed him to implement his policies, he was backed the military and police and fear. guns never work with that. in fact the movie idea is never about guns. the revolution was done without guns! you need to re-watch.

anon youre a fool...first comparing the obama administration to bush hahahahah bush is in the past and we both know they were put in a place for the same purpose and if you dont believe in a God..not a man in the clouds but a God. doesnt matter what you think it is but if you dont think it exists you must have been born with a defect. look up flower of life and we already know when America ended.

You are all going about it the wrong way haha. Firstly, the English going about godlessness is all just a bunch of shit. V, in the first scene quotes Polonius from Hamlet "We are oft' to blame in this, 'tis too much proved that with devotions visage and pious action we sugar o'er the devil himself" meaning that they all hid behind religious faith to hide the devils they truly were. V hated the fact they could all hide behind Christianity and he was the only person who could see through it. All of you are saying "god will help us in our time of need" "God will see that justice prevails" No he won't. As you can see in the movie, there is no God. V did it all on his own, promoting ideas that weren't all holy yet he started a revolution and succeeded. He didn't need "God" on his side. So if you guys want to start a revolution you're going to have to do it yourselves. God isn't going to be there to pull your asses out of the gutter. ------annoyed 14 year-old girl.

What all of you don't get is that the entire revolution 'V' started wasn't successful with GOD on his side. For one, V hated religion, if you paid enough attention to the movie as it is. In his first scene, he quotes Polonius from the famous playwright Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' quoting "We are oft' to blame in this, 'tis too much proved that with devotion's visage and pious action we sugar o'er the devil himself" this quote compares and contrasts with the real world, basically he's stating that the Norsefire government and its chancellor sutler abuse religious faith to hide behind it, therefore the "devil" (their own sins) are covered up. You're all expecting for freedom and "god to stand by your side" "god will see that justice prevails" i, i don't get it. V's whole revolution succeeded simply because he didn't believe in anything, anyone but himself. He was smart enough not to rely on "a mythical creature" like i see an anon has posted on here which is completely correct. There is no god :) -annoyed 14-year-old girl.
